What to Expect

What Will the Massage Feel Like?

It depends on the techniques used.  In a general Swedish massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes which will help to calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension.   As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve area of muscular tension.  You should communicate immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken.  Massage is most effective when your body is not resisting.

Must I Be Completely Undressed?

Most massage techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, you may decide what amount of clothing you prefer to wear for your own comfort.  You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable.  Only the area being worked on will be exposed.  Your privacy is always respected.

What are the Benefits of Massage?

Massage can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure.  Massage is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well-being.  You may experience emotions during or after your massage.  We often hold feelings in our bodies and the session may release them.  This is a positive thing, and you will be treated very supportively.

What parts of my body will be massaged?

Your desired outcome will be discussed prior to beginning the session.  This will determine which parts of your body require massage.  A typical full body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders.  You will not be touched on our near your genitals (more ore female) or breasts (female).

How Long Will the Session Last?

The average full-body massage session lasts approximately one hour.  A half hour appointment only allows time for a partial massage session, such as neck and shoulders, back, or legs and feet.  Many people prefer a 60 - 90 minute session for optimal relaxation.  Always allow relaxation time prior to and after the session.

How Will I Feel After the Massage Session?

Most people feel very relaxed.  Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity.  After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days.  It is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage.

How to Make the Most of Your Massage

  •  Congratulations!  Getting a massage may take lots of courage for some and be very easy for others.  Some anxiety is quite normal.

  •  Avoid eating a large meal or drinking caffeinated beverages prior to your massage.  Light meals or snacks are best and will not cause a disruption in blood flow.

  •  Use the restroom prior to your massage.  Do not hesitate to interrupt the massage if necessary.

  •  Try not to schedule yourself too tightly.  It is ideal if you can have some quiet time following the massage.  Do not however, wait for the "perfect" time--it may never come!  Allow an extra 10 - 15 minutes for your initial appointment.  This is necessary for a thorough discussion of your health status and our objectives for the massage therapy.

  • Neck work may result in some oil residue on your hair.  Care is given to make this as minimal as possible.  Bring comfortable clothing for after your massage if you do not have to go back to work, ect.

  •  You do not have to bring gym shorts or a swimming suit.  You will be asked to disrobe to your comfort level.  Many clients leave their underpants on.  Draping is always done to ensure privacy.

  •  Feel free to bring a favorite CD along if you wish.  I do have music to choose from.  If you prefer selence, please express that preference.

  •  Massage that is given for the purpose of pain reduction requires client/therapist communication.  Ask questions, express your needs as clearly as possible, and provide feedback.  Too much pressure can be harmful, while too little pressure can be ineffective in providing a necessary release.  Your massage therapist will help you learn how to best communicate.

  •  You may experience emotions during or after your massage.  We often hold feelings in our bodies and massage may release them.  This is a positive thing, and you will be treated with compassion and support.

  •  Drink lots of water for several days after your massage.  It will help flush the cellular waste sent into your system from the bodywork and will reduce any soreness you might feel.
